Complainers

Beware of people who only complain about you behind your back.

Their negativity won't help you grow or improve.

I learned this lesson early on during my time in radio.

Despite constantly hearing rumors about salespeople disliking my on-air style, none of them ever approached me directly.

I decided to take matters into my own hands and ask every one of them if they had any feedback on my performance. Ya know cause we’re a team, I thought. I truly appreciated any constructive criticism I received, as it helped me become a better voiceover artist.

On the other hand, I was met with resistance and skepticism. It seemed like my colleagues thought I was crazy for seeking feedback. None of those I asked took me up on my offer, and the behind-the-scenes complaining continued.

It dawned on me that these people didn't genuinely care about my growth or success. If they did, they would have been willing to have an open and honest conversation with me.

This experience taught me that having respect for someone doesn't always mean being nice to their face. Real respect involves being willing to have tough conversations and offer constructive feedback.

In all relationships - whether personal or professional - we should strive to create a place where open communication is encouraged.
